  2. ** INTRODUCTION
  3.  
  4. This file accompanies the Star Trek TNG and DS9 episode guides.  They are
  5. WordPerfect 5.1 documents.  The guides are meant to be small and portable,
  6. ideal for the coffee table.  They are fairly easy to print for yourself as
  7. long as you use an appropriate font but, most importantly, print their
  8. pages in the appropriate order.  This is particularly true if you do not
  9. have a duplex printer at your disposal.  Also, to assemble the guides, you
  10. will need a fairly large stapler...  Finally, this document has a graphic
  11. on the front page:  if your printer doesn't like these graphics then
  12. suppress or delete them.
  13.  
  14. ** DUPLEX PRINTING
  15.  
  16. Originally, these documents were produced for an Epson dot-matrix printer.
  17. A lot of manual effort is required in printing them.  If you have a duplex
  18. printer, that is, one that can print automatically to both sides of a sheet
  19. of paper, then you can put all this technology to use.  New documents have
  20. been designed for printing on an Hewlett-Packard LaserJet IID or IIID
  21. duplex laser printer.  They look great on this printer *and* require
  22. considerably less effort on your part!
  23.  
  24. ** THE NUMBERS
  25.  
  26. The guides, in their final form, are 4¼ inches wide and 11 inches tall.
  27. This is achieved by folding normal 8½ by 11 inch paper in half across the
  28. length.  They are bound like a book with staples.
  29.  
  30. The Next Generation document is 12 pages in length;  Deep Space Nine is 6
  31. pages long.  When folded in half, in a booklet form, they have then twice
  32. as many "pages."  Before you print these files, ensure they are the correct
  33. length.  If your "small" printer font is too large, WordPerfect will
  34. automatically extend the document but this will adversely affect the paging
  35. in the guide.  DON'T PRINT THEM IF THEY ARE LONGER THAN 12 OR 6 PAGES.

  37. ** INCLUDED FILES

  49. ** PRINTING ON A DUPLEX PRINTER
  50.  
  51. You can print your own copies quickly if you have the following:
  52.  
  53.         microcomputer
  54.         WordPerfect 5.1
  55.         HP LaserJet IID or IIID printer with decent fonts
  56.         18 sheets of nice paper
  57.         6 minutes
  58.  
  59. Load each document, adjust fonts if necessary, preview it, VERIFY THE
  60. LENGTH, and send it to print.  Simple, huh?
  61.  
  62. Arrange the pages in stardate order with the cover facing out.  Staple
  63. carefully on the spine just like a small book.  Fold in half.
  64. Presto!
  65.  
  66. ** PRINTING ON A NON-DUPLEX PRINTER
  67.  
  68. You can still print copies if you have the following:
  69.  
  70.         microcomputer
  71.         WordPerfect 5.1
  72.         Epson LQ-510 or similar printer with a small font
  73.         18 sheets of nice paper
  74.         30 minutes
  75.  
  76. The Next Generation
  77. -------------------
  78.  
  79. Print the first 6 pages on one side of 6 pieces of paper.  Keep them in
  80. order!  Then print pages 7 through 12 on the opposite sides of these 6
  81. sheets.  Insert the sheets in the order that they were printed in the first
  82. run.  In other words, the WordPerfect page 7 is printed on the back of
  83. sheet 1, the WP page 8 on the back of sheet 2, et cetera.  Use the
  84. Multiple Pages command in the Print menu (M or 5) and enter "7-12" and
  85. press Enter.

  87. Arrange them in stardate with the cover facing out.  Staple carefully on
  88. the spine just like a small book.  Fold in half.  See?

  90. Deep Space Nine
  91. ---------------
  92. Print pages 1 through 3.  Keep pages in order!  Send pages 4 through 6 to
  93. print.  Insert previously printed sheets in same order from first fun.
  94. WordPerfect's page 4 will print on back of sheet 1, WP page 5 will print on
  95. back of 2, etc.  Use the Multiple Pages command.

  97. Arrange into stardate order with cover facing out.  Staple careful along
  98. spine and fold in half.
  99.  
  100. ** OTHER PRINTERS
  101.  
  102. Obviously, you may not have these printers.  You can still print this
  103. document if you use fonts that are not too large.  The bulk of the document
  104. (particularly, each episode's description) is generated using the Epson's
  105. Roman font set to a horizontal pitch of 15 characters per inch.  The
  106. episode titles and stardate are printed in Roman 12 cpi.  The page header
  107. is in Sans Serif 12 cpi double-high.  The entire document is printed with a
  108. standard vertical pitch of 6 lines per inch.  If you do not have a duplex
  109. printer, just print using the .EPS version.
  110.  
  111. ** FONTS
  112.  
  113. In each of the documents, there are *some* specific fonts requested.  You
  114. may not have these available so some changes on your part may be necessary.
  115. The bulk of the document uses font size "attributes" however so as to
  116. minimize the impact of not having certain, esoteric fonts...
  117.  
  118. The episode description text is printed at a smaller size by using the
  119. "small" font attribute (selected via the Font [Ctrl-F8]|Size|Small command).
  120. By default, this is 80% the size of the normal font used by WordPerfect.
  121. If your "small" font is too large, you must select a smaller printer font.
  122. Do not attempt to replace the [SMALL] [small] print codes;  that is too
  123. difficult.
  124.  
  125. You can easily alter what WordPerfect interprets as small by
  126. using the command:  Setup [Shift-F1]|Initial Settings|Print Options|Size
  127. Attribute Ratios.  By default, this number is around 80%;  make it smaller,
  128. say 40 to 60%.

  130. These settings are stored in the printer driver so it must be updated.
  131.  
  132. - go into the Print menu [Shift-F7]
  133. - select the Printer command (S)
  134. - highlight the printer for adjustment
  135. - select Update (U or 7)
  136.  
  137. The printer update is required if you do not have a Postscript printer.
  138.  
  139. ** GRAPHICS
  140.  
  141. A graphic of the Next Generation logo is included on the cover page of
  142. this guide.  If it does not print correctly on your printer, suppress
  143. the printing of graphics from the WordPerfect print menu.
  144.  
  145. - access the Print menu (Shift-F7)
  146. - select Graphics Quality (G)
  147. - set to not print (N or 1)
  148.  
  149. ** CLOSING
